When It Rains, It Pours!
Wow I can't believe that a month has already gone by! Time really does fly when you are having fun. I cannot get enough of this city. The booming modelling industry, the heat, the kind and 'sometimes English speaking' people, the 'Asian and European' food, the sophisticated clubs, the water, the sandy beaches... HK is the place to live, work, and vacation!
It is also the easiest place to get around. The majority of people here don't own cars because the MTR and BUS system takes you everywhere in a flash. This is especially important for 'us models.' Sometimes I have up to 3-4 castings a day and it is so easy to get from one place to another.
Plus, it is cheap, cheap, cheap! Taking the MTR costs less than a dollar for round trips to any station, and when it closes at 12:30 a.m. taxis are always available. I know what you are thinking... but taxis are expensive right? No need to worry. It literally costs only $100 HKD (around 13 bucks CDN) to get from downtown (the start of the Island subway line called 'Central') to the end of the Island line called Chai Wan, which is a half hour away. I often take this route because I live in Chai Wan but I love hanging out in Central. Everything is in Central – the restaurants, the dancing, the fitness, and 'not to mention' the incredible shopping district.
The title "when it rains, it pours!" is the theme of this blog for a few reasons. Not only does it apply to the rainy weather in HK for the last few weeks, but it also describes the modelling opportunities that have come my way. Just recently I shot an 8-page bridal spread in JESSICA Magazine, which is set to come out this month (I promise to post the tears in my next blog). Thereafter I was hired by a previous client to represent ALDER Jewelry by modelling for the launch of their new lines.
Both jobs involved wearing millions of dollars of jewelry. At the JESSICA shoot I wore 8 different American-style wedding gowns and with each dress I was 'decked out' in millions of dollars of ruby's, emeralds, and white diamonds. There must have been at least 6 bodyguards at the shoot, carefully placing the jewels on me and removing them before I hopped into my next dress. While I did feel like a bride for the day, I was very nervous wearing these jewels. I removed every piece ever so carefully.

At the ALDER jewelry showing there were even more guards, and it's not surprising, since I was wearing millions of dollars worth of rings and necklaces. In particular, I was modelling an $800,000 dollar massive heart-shaped ring with a huge emerald rock encased in white diamonds and it was SOLD! Can you believe it?
ALDER's 'special female customer' fell in love with it! And when I say that... I mean... she literally ripped it off my ring finger and bought it! Immediately I thought... how can she afford that? Who is her husband? What is that ring for? I almost fainted when I heard that she bought this ring for herself for no special reason. A summer gift maybe? OMG! But, for the most part, I was stoked that I helped sell it! I was a jewelry realtor for the day...
It is still raining outside and modelling jobs are also lining up. HK fashion week is on its way and I have already been booked for two swimwear shows including SOGO swimwear. This week I will be busy trying out for several shows, which include both local and international designers. In particular, I have three castings tomorrow (Adidas and Reebok sportswear and lingerie) and even more the next day. I am pretty pumped to walk the catwalk here. Yet I am even more excited to start doing commercials! This week I will also be trying out for a bunch of commercial gigs – my favorite type of job because you get to inject your personality!

So what else is raining? The perks! While a model's life can be tiring at times, running from casting to casting, and standing on your feet for up to eight hours shooting (not to mention the sweltering HK heat), there are many benefits that come with this 'beautiful' career.
Aside from the free meals/drinks at the coolest HK restaurants, just recently my roommates and I got VIP access to HK's annual DIESEL fashion show and thereafter I found myself at HK's COACH party featuring a private concert by John Mayer. I was literally just feet away from Mr. Mayer, and as a huge fan of his, you can only imagine how excited I was! :D These parties are especially great for mingling with clients.
Now as promised from my last blog...
"In the land of HK"
1. People drive on the wrong side of the road
2. Tap water is not drinkable
3. Model clients look at your hands and feet
4. Blonde hair is a rarity
5. Space is limited
Ciao until blog 3!!!
